Who we are

About ThreatRated

ThreatRated exists because most security tool review sites are written by content farms, not security professionals. We think consumers deserve better.

The problem we're solving

Search for "best VPN" or "best password manager" and you'll find page after page of reviews written by generalist writers optimized for SEO, not security. Affiliate commissions quietly determine rankings. Marketing claims go unchallenged.

ThreatRated is built on a different premise: security tool reviews should be written by someone who actually understands what they're evaluating — encryption protocols, jurisdiction risk, audit quality, threat modeling, and trust chain integrity.

Security Architect

CISSP · Security+ · AWS Cloud Practitioner

ThreatRated is authored by a security architect with 13+ years of enterprise security experience spanning financial services, law enforcement, and Fortune 500 environments.

Prior roles include threat intelligence work at Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 — one of the world's foremost threat research teams — and security operations supporting the NYPD. Additional experience includes information security roles at major financial institutions and AI security work at Meta Platforms.

Every product reviewed on this site has been evaluated through the same lens used in enterprise security architecture: not "is this product good?" but "does this product hold up under adversarial conditions, and what are the residual risks?"

Editorial independence

ThreatRated is independently operated. No venture capital, no private equity, no corporate ownership with conflicting interests. Revenue comes exclusively from affiliate commissions on products we recommend — commissions that never influence what we recommend.

Several products ranked highly on this site (including Windows Defender and Bitwarden Free) pay no affiliate commission. They rank highly because they deserve to.
